Evaluation Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Evaluation Question 3 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout the production of all my media products I have various feedback from people of different age groups. From this feedback I was able to adjust my products accordingly in order to please people of different age, gender and social class as I did not want to only appeal to people of my age group, but others older and younger as well. To gather audience feedback I created a variety of surveys, which I had people fill out after watching my music video. I also posted my video on social media as different age groups and different genders all use social media such as; Facebook and Twitter, this gave me a clear idea how I could improve my products to make them more appealing to the mass audience not only the majority.
During my first draft I created a survey using Survey Monkey, asking how my product could be developed and changed. However my first draft was not a completed version as I had not filmed the whole scenes, so with the feedback I received I knew how I could develop my video to encourage people to watch it, without them seeing the full product.
First Draft
Survey Questions and Feedback
First set of questions that I asked:
- How old are you?
- How effective do you find my product?
- What do you think my narrative is?
- What could I do to improve my video?
- Would you watch it again?
Asking my audience who took part in the feedback was a decision I made so I knew who would be consuming my product. Knowing who would consume my product I was able to progress and create a video which would be appealing and have an affect upon people.
For my second question I asked how effective did they think my video was after watching my first draft. From this feedback I was able to progress and change certain elements of my video to make it look more pleasing.
Asking the audience what the narrative is allowed me to change it to make it clearer. Changing the narrative was overall effective as the video looked more professional and unique.
In relation to my previous questions I asked the audience what they would change and what I could do to improve my video. Doing this enabled me to create a video which was eye-catching for my target audience.
Asking if my intended audience would watch my video again was vital in creating a successful video which would appeal to more people other than my target audience.

What I learned from my first draft audience feedback?
After the feedback which I got from my first draft, I knew the next steps which I had to take in order to make my second draft better. From my first draft I decided to change the female character, I decided to do this as I thought the first female looked to young, therefore I picked to use someone who looked older and could match the age of the male character.
I felt that the footage from my original draft was dark and overall bad quality. The footage was something which got mentioned a lot in the responses of my survey. As the quality of the footage was poor, it was unclear to tell what the narrative was and I did feel like there was no clear structure to it. Therefore this was something I knew that needed to be changed, as without a narrative to the song Depth Over Distance, the video would be pointless and not make sense.
Taking all of the feedback from my first draft into consideration, I then went on to produce my second draft. From the feedback I got from my first draft I felt like I improved my video massively and the narrative was starting to become more clear as I included the male into the video, by editing his scenes and cutting between showing the female and male.
Second Draft
Feedback
To get feedback of people answering questions about my second draft and how I could include it in making my final draft better, I decided to film them talking about my video. One of the main pieces of feedback I got was the scenes in my music video which were quite long therefore to make my video look more interesting and appealing to my target audience I cut the scenes down so that they weren't long. Doing this allowed me to include more footage which I originally intended not to include. As the footage changed in my video it meant that my narrative changed and became different from the idea I had decided on. At the start of planning my video I came up with three ideas, picking one of them which I created my storyboard on. From my first idea I developed it using my second idea which I came up with. The final idea what I decided on was showing the female and male separated as they are shown walking across different distance on their own. The beginning of the narrative is confusing but it later becomes clear when they are shown in the same locations even though they are not seen together. Using split screens and effects I managed to show that the male was in fact dead but was still shown to be alive during the narrative as this acted like he was memory. The effects at the end of the video when the males full identity is shown, show him in a light colour this implies that he is a memory from the light colour connoting this.
Final Draft
After all the feedback I gathered on my video, I was able to create a video which I was happy with.
Feedback on all of my products; music video, digipack and advertisement.
After changing my video to make it more appealing after all of the feedback that I received, I was able to focus on getting feedback on my ancillary texts and to see if they all relate to each other and if so if it was clear and do they all link together.
Questions which I asked about all three of my products.
1. Are you male or female?
2. How old are you?
3. After watching the music video I have made what do you think the story (narrative) is of the music video?
4. Do you think the music video reflects the lyrics of the song?
5. What genre do you think the music video is?
6. Did you enjoy watching the music video? If not, what would you improve about my video?
7. Would you buy my music video on ITunes or from any other media platform?
8. After looking at my digipack do you think it reflects the music video and the song? If yes how?
9. Does the magazine advertisement include all of the information you would need? If not what's missing?
10. Does the music video, digipack and magazine advertisement all show continuity and reflect one another?
Evaluation Question 4 - How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Hardware
Camera
The camera which I used to film my video was a Nikon Coolpix S9900. This was a camera which I already owned, so I didn't have to book one out from college, which was beneficial as many other students were booking cameras out at the same time that I needed one. Another benefit from owning my own camera was that I could use it to film whenever I wanted to, and it was easily portable to carry to different places. Having a portable camera which was easy to carry allowed me to take it to different locations where I wanted to film. The camera itself was high quality and adjusted to different lighting, therefore it adjusted to the dullness of the weather that I filmed in, still making it clear and not disorientated. During the filming of my first draft I used my phone to capture the footage, which made it unclear and dark making the overall quality was poor. From the feedback that I got from my first draft it encouraged me to use a different camera other than my phone camera, this was because of the poor quality. In my first draft I did not use a tripod as I was using my phone to film, using a camera allowed me to use a tripod as it would actually fit and make the footage stable and not uneven. This was another benefit of using camera to film. On the other hand, the downside of using the camera to film was that it was not easy to compact as it was quite bulky, meaning I had to carry it around in a camera bag which added to the things that I had to carry. Another disadvantage to using this camera was that it took a while to adjust to the lighting, meaning that it was time consuming when filming in dark areas. When initially setting up the camera for the first time using it to film, it took a while to select the right setting that would give me the best quality overall. The camera was also battery powered this meant that I had to make sure the camera was charged before I started to film.

IPhone
For my first draft I used my phone to film my footage, as it was easy and light making it portable so I could film in more locations. Filming with a small light device allowed me to film at different angles as it was easy to move around without damaging the phone. The phone's battery didn't last long so I had to be selective on what I wanted to film. To overcome this I had had to film on various days which meant it took longer than planned setting me back on other things I could have been doing like editing. Also filming on different days meant that the weather was not always the same as seen in my draft versions of my video. Using my phone made me realise that I should have used a camera, therefore this improved the quality of my footage. The downside of using my phone meant that I wasn't able to use a tripod to film, therefore making the still shots that I wanted to film uneven and poor quality.
Tripod
Tripod
I did not use a tripod until making my second draft, as for my first draft I used my phone meaning that it would not fit on to the tripod as the one which I used was only to be used with cameras. There is a massive improvement between my first draft and my second draft, as the camera is more steady and stable as when using the tripod I had more control over the camera movement than what I did when I didn't use the tripod. Using the tripod enabled me to move the camera easily and remove the camera when I didn't want to use the camera. The tripod was easy to angle and change the height to where I wanted it to be in order to get the shot that I wanted. As I filmed when the weather was bad the benefit of using a tripod meant that the camera did not move in the wind and remained still throughout filming. The tripod was portable which meant I could carry it between locations. The issues which I found when using the tripod were setting it up every time I needed to use it, and having to get the correct height as each time I used it I had a different height because not all the shots were going to be the same. Another problem which I found was carrying it between different locations as some locations were quite a distance from each other meaning that It had to be carried, however it was portable so this was not really a problem.
Card reader
Card reader
Having a card reader when doing my work meant that I could upload my footage from my camera which was saved on my SD card onto the Mac suite. After importing my footage from my SD card using the card reader I could then upload the footage that I wanted to use onto Final Cut and start editing my video. Not only did the card reader have a SD card slot it also had a micro SD card and memory stick import. When using the Mac the majority of my USB ports were already in use, which meant I had to chose what I wanted to use either my card reader or my memory stick, but as my card reader had both imports I did not have to struggle and I could use both the SD card and memory stick at the same time. The only issue I had with the card reader was at first it wasn't reading my SD card, however I managed to overcome this problem by cleaning the card reader.
Memory stick/ SD card
Similar to the card reader I used the memory stick in exactly the same way. However the memory stick actually contained my footage from what I had filmed. When using the camera to film I used a 16 GB SD card to store my footage on, this gave me plenty of room to film different shots that I wanted to use for my video without the storage getting full. After I filmed my shots I backed them up on a memory stick as well as the SD card, this was a backup in case the original footage from the SD card accidentally got wiped/deleted when using the Mac.

Edit suite
The edit suite that I used to create my final video was a Mac. The edit suite was straight forward to use and was not complicated, the edit suite allowed me to control the editing software Final Cut easily. When using the edit suite it did not crash no matter how many tabs I had open, this was beneficial as I was able to make my video without a problem and it did not slow me down. Another thing which was a benefit when using the Mac as a edit suite was that it already had all the software installed on it which I needed including Final Cut. However, when using the Mac at college it meant I had a limited chance of getting one, as when the deadline for the video drafts had to be in it meant that everyone wanted a computer to do their work on making it difficult to get one during my free periods and dinner. Another issue which I had when making my video was that I could only use the same computer as my work only saved to that particular one.

Software
Blogger
The main software which I used throughout the whole process of my advanced portfolio is Blogger. I used Blogger throughout to record all of my work which includes; planning and research, all of my products such as; the music video, digipack and my advertisement, the production of my work. I found it easy and straightforward to use as I had used it in my foundation portfolio. Another benefit of using Blogger was that I could change the date of the posts, so I could put them in order of the check-list as well as grouping all similar posts together, this meant they were easy to allocate if I needed to find them instead of scrolling through all of my posts. The overall simple layout of Blogger made it easy to publish posts and add external links such as; presentations which I had created on Prezi, Emaze and Slide Share. The only issue I had when using Blogger was that sometimes it took a while to upload posts, however this issue was easily overcome. As well as presentations I also could add YouTube videos of the process of my music video, and tutorials which helped me to create my video.

Photoshop
Photoshop was the main software I used when creating my ancillary texts. I already had previous experience prior to my advanced portfolio when using Photoshop as I used it in my first year. The layout of Photoshop was not complicated and was easy to navigate. The wide range of tools and effects were extremely beneficial as it meant that I only had to use one software, and did not have to change between others. As there were so many tools I had to find where they were and what category they were under. The main ones were easy to find such as the shapes, but when it came to editing and when I had to adjust the brightness and hue levels, there was quite a lot of drop down lists that I had to go through to get to the editing tool that I wanted which I found time consuming. Furthermore, I had not used Photoshop since my foundation portfolio meaning I had to remember how to work it. The trouble I had was opening an image onto the document that I was working on. As when you opened a image it opened up in a separate tab to the main document I was working on, which was the document that I wanted to add the image to. In my first year this was something which I had to do a lot when creating my magazine cover, but after a year I forgot how to put the image onto the same document I wanted it on. Therefore, I had to watch a YouTube tutorial on how to drag and drop it on the document I wanted it on.

Final cut
Final Cut was the main software I used to create my video. The software had everything I needed on it, and like Photoshop I did not have to use any other software. One of the main benefits of this software was that there were a lot of YouTube tutorials on how to edit, as I did not really understand how work the software as it was my first time using it to create a video. Final Cut had every effect that I thought would go well with my song and many more. It was easy to cut down my footage and edit pieces out that were not necessary such as sound. Another thing which I really liked about Final Cut was that you could reverse your footage making it go backwards, I did this a lot throughout my video as it added to my narrative. Using Final Cut helped me to merge footage with other footage meaning I could overlap it and it would not look messy. The only problem I had which I have previously mentioned was that I had never used the software before so I did not know how to work it. However to overcome this problem I watched YouTube tutorials which I found really useful as they instructed me on how to do certain editing to my footage and add particular effects which I thought would make my video look appealing.

Prezi
Prezi is a presentation software which I found during my first year of doing media. Using Prezi to show the production of my work made the process which I had to explain look more interesting and professional, rather than just continuous writing on my blog. Using Prezi allowed me to include information on things I had done, but it also let me embed videos and add images to further explain my process and to back my points up which I had made. Every Prezi I made was different, as you could pick from many different themes which all had different backgrounds and effects. However if you did not want to use a theme which was already on Prezi, you could create your own starting with a blank presentation. Using Prezi meant that I could share it on my blog by embedding it. At first I found it hard to embed the presentation onto my blog as I did not know how to do this, even when I followed instructions from Google it still would not work, it took me a while before I managed to figure out how to do it and after that it was simple. Learning how to embed a Prezi onto my blog useful when I wanted to embed a Slide Share or Emaze I knew how to do it and I did not have to mess around searching for instructions.

Slide share
Like Prezi, Slide Share is another presentation software which I used to explain the process of the production of my work. Slide share was great for the display of my work, however the downside to Slide Share was that you had to create the presentation before and then you was able to upload it onto Slide Share, where it was transformed and made to fit the layout and design. The embedding process was similar to Prezi, so it was less time consuming to upload it onto my blog.

Emaze

Emaze
Again similar to Prezi and Slide Share, Emaze is another presentation software which I used. Using Emaze made my work more visually pleasurable. Like Prezi and Slide Share, using Emaze you can add videos and images to make your work look more interesting, this was helpful when I had to explain the process of making something like my ancillary texts. As mentioned using Prezi and Slide Share before allowed me to embed my presentation easily without any complications.

Storyboard That

Storyboard That
Using Storyboard That, I created a storyboard that would help me to structure my chosen narrative when filming for my video. The storyboard software was set out like an actual storyboard meaning it looked professional when I uploaded the screenshots onto my blog. When creating my storyboard I did not have to create any backgrounds or characters as they were already created which you could edit, this made making my storyboard less time consuming. As I was using the free version of Storyboard That, I could only create a certain amount of storyboards at the same time. This meant I was not able to create all the slides that I needed to that would allow me to fully explain every shot and explain what was going to happen in the narrative. This became a problem as I did not want to miss any explanation of my narrative out. Therefore, whilst making my storyboard I had to screenshot images which I had just created and save them onto my computer so I could later upload them altogether and put them onto my blog. Every storyboard that I created I had to take a screenshot. To make sure I put my storyboard in order, I created a Prezi to present my storyboard in the order it went in.

YouTube
Using YouTube for different reasons throughout my advanced portfolio was really beneficial and helpful. Not only did I used YouTube to upload my music video drafts and final version, I also used it to watch tutorials on how to work software which I did not know how to work such as Final Cut. From using YouTube I watched different videos within my music genre which gave me different ideas of what I could incorporate into my own video, such as reverse footage. This idea came from Alt-J Breezeblocks where the whole of the narrative is in reverse. Using YouTube meant that I could create an account and share my work and upload it onto my blog. It was simple to upload my work from YouTube onto my blog. The only issue I had was finding it, I had to use the exact name of what I called my video to make sure that I upload the correct one. Another issue which was a problem when researching and planning was uploading artists videos who had a Vevo YouTube account, as blogger would not let me upload the videos onto my blog I had to take screenshots as an alternative, which was not as good as having the actual video on my blog.
Music Videos which I looked at when planning my videos.
ICloud
Music Videos which I looked at when planning my videos.
When using my phone to film some footage, I was able to back-up the videos using Apples iCloud. Immediately after filming my footage it saved to the Cloud, which meant if any of my videos got deleted I would have a backup which would be easily retrievable. The only downside to the Cloud is that you have to have a certain amount of storage available if you it to back up your videos. This became an issue as I had limited storage, which mean some of my footage was not backup. As some footage did not get backed up I had to immediately save extra copies onto my SD card and Memory Stick. However this was not an issue as I would have done this anyway.
My own evaluation of my production process of making my music video and ancillary products.
What went wrong?
When making my first draft I used my phone to film the footage. I found when editing for my mock exam that this was a bad decision as in some videos I had held the camera upwards instead of sideways, making my footage portrait instead of landscape. When I started to edit this became an issue as my footage did not fit the screen meaning that there was a black border around the outside, and it did not create continuity with my other footage which was actually filmed the correct way. In some instances I managed to stretch the footage to make it the size of the full screen, but this could only be done when my footage was abstract and did not work when I had filmed people. Another problem which I came across when filming was the quality of the footage. When filming in different lights the camera adjusted to the new light during my filming, this meant that I had to re-film most of my footage as I only noticed about the quality when I was editing. After making all of my ancillary products I included the real artist name which I had to go back and change, so I wasn't using the same name 'Ben Howard' therefore I changed the name on my final ancillary products to 'Tom Howard' keeping the surname so that the product would not look completely different from what I originally intended the product to look like. In keeping with my original idea I decided to change the first name of the artist from another three letter male name to a new three letter male name, the first name which I used was 'Ben' but I changed this to 'Tom' so that I was not copying the artists real name.

What went well?
In my opinion I think that the overall process went well mainly the research and planning. From the research and planning that I did it gave me ideas of what I could include in my video such as; camera angles, editing techniques like split screen and effects like filters. All these helped me to create my video and make my full video with added extras like filters to make it more interesting and appealing. When creating my ancillary texts I decided to make something different that would still fit in with my music video. To do this I decided to use facial features such as; a tree in the shape of an head or an eye embedded within the tree.

What would you do differently?
If I was to do my video differently I would make sure it had a clear narrative. The narrative which I finished with in my final video is different to the one I originally intended to have which I created using Storyboard That. The narrative changed and developed throughout filming and one of my other ideas which I came up with before creating the video, I thought would be more fitting to the song, but I could also include it in the narrative which I decided on and make a new narrative. Doing a new narrative and creating it while filming meant that I could not use the storyboard that I had created. My original narrative was to have a man and women traveling across numerous distances and meeting each other as the song is called Depth Over Distance. For this narrative I wanted to show the man and the woman together and then show them separating. After the couple were shown to be leaving each other, I had the intention of the video going backwards, to which it would show them in reverse and meeting again at the end as the closure of the narrative. Throughout this narrative the males identity was going to remain a mystery until the end when the narrative closes. However during filming I did not stick to this idea. The new idea which I came up with was to have a similar narrative where they were seen traveling across different distances and then meeting. I decided to do a twist on the narrative which would not be clear until the end. The twist on the narrative was to show the males identity and imply that he has passed away, to show this I used a filter and a split screen. The idea behind the video to make sure that it made sense was to imply that the male is a memory that is why his identity is not fully shown until the end, this why I filmed the female and male in the same locations but not together.

The idea behind the video to make sure that it made sense was to imply that the male is a memory that is why his identity is not fully shown until the end, this why I filmed the female and male in the same locations but not together.
Screen shots of the process of making my video.
